is proud to announce the participation of
Nalini Malani
in
9 June - 16 September 2012
an artists book is being published by Hatje Cantz and Documenta (13)
Nalini Malani: In Search of Vanished Blood delves into the multifaceted background of a visionary artist whose work holds a mirror to six decades of tumultuous history, while significantly changing the course of modernist practice in India. This artist’s book reveals Malani’s influential thought and engaged ways of working through the making of her latest video/shadow play produced by dOCUMENTA (13).
In conversation with Malani, Artistic Director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev discusses the possibility of purging and healing within art while exploring her artistic, political, and feminist history. With socio-cultural anthropologist Arjun Appadurai, Malani contextualizes their collaboration for the dOCUMENTA (13) publication series 100 Notes – 100 Thoughts on the misuse of Gandhi’s ideas as a perversion of ideology in order to perpetuate atrocities. In his essay, Andreas Huyssen focuses on the artist’s multimedia work in relation to the structure of political memory, combining this with the vicissitudes of cultural transfer and the circulation of visual and literary images in an increasing global art scene. An extensive biography illustrated how Malani’s art has been influenced from the very start by a cinematic approach, from her experimental films of the sixties to her current paintings, theater, and video/shadow plays.
Includes Nalini Malani: Cassandra’s Gift, an experimental documentary on DVD by the young award-winning filmmaker Payal Kapadia
Edited by Zasha Colah and Johan Pijnappel

[10.10.2010] Passion for Renoir - Museo National del Prado (Madrid)
Passion for Renoir: The Collection of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute
19 October 2010 - 6 February 2011
Museo National del Prado (Madrid)
http://www.museodelprado.es/enCurator: Javier Barón, Head of the Department of 19th-century Painting at the Museo Nacional del Prado, and Richard Rand, Senior Curator at Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute
Exhibition co-organised by the Museo Nacional del Prado (Madrid) and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (Williamstown, Massachusetts)
The artistic career of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), one of the leading figures of Impressionism, is characterised by an all-absorbing passion for painting that led him to achieve great renown and popularity among his contemporaries. The outstanding group of 31 works by the artist, which are the finest among the collection of paintings by Renoir assembled by the American collector Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956), founder of the Sterling and Francine Clark Institute (Williamstown), will be displayed at the Prado, sponsored by Fundación BBVA in the first monographic exhibition to be held on the artist in Spain.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, La Loge (The Theatre Box), 1880. The Clark, Williamstown, MA, USA
The core of the collection of paintings from the Clark Institute originates in the large group of Impressionist works assembled by Sterling and Francine Clark over the course of four decades. For the Clarks, Pierre-Auguste Renoir represented the quintessence of Impressionism and as a result they acquired more than 35 of his paintings, including some of his most important creations. Among them are the Self-portrait (ca.1875), a painting whose technique departs from Renoir’s habitual delicacy to offer a notably powerful expressivity; Portrait of Madame Monet (ca.1874), which spans the boundary between portraiture and genre painting and deploys an unconventional type of fragmented brushstroke; The Wash-House at Bas-Meudon (ca.1874), and The Bridge at Chatou (ca.1875), which are highly experimental landscapes dating from Renoir’s finest Impressionist period; La Loge (The Theatre Box) (1880), which uses strong tonal contrasts of blacks and whites and avoids the predominantly blue palette that had characterised Renoir’s work over the previous five years; Peonies (ca.1880), one of the artist’s most magnificent flower paintings and an example of the way in which he delighted in filling his canvases to the edges without leaving any empty space; Onions (1881), a fluidly painted and informal but carefully structured composition that was Sterling Clark’s favourite work by the artist; and The Bath (Girl arranging her Hair) (1885), one of the most precisely and exquisitely drawn of Renoir’s figures and the culmination of his mastery of the Impressionist technique.
As with all the Impressionists, Renoir is an artist barely represented in Spanish public collections with the sole exception of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, which, like the Clark Art Institute, has its origins in a private collection.
The Clark Institute was founded in the city of Williamstown (Massachusetts) through the generous patronage of the Clarks. The Institute’s Museum opened in 1955. The Impressionist paintings are especially notable among its rich and diverse holdings, while particularly outstanding within that group are the works by Renoir that form the basis of the present exhibition.
The catalogue
In the accompanying catalogue the entries are taken from the first catalogue raisonné of the 19th-century paintings collection in the Clark Institute, which was based on research undertaken by John House, the leading specialist in French Impressionism and Renoir. The catalogue will also include an article by James A. Ganz on Sterling Clark as a collector.

[26.08.2010] Exhibition "The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today"
August 1–November 1, 2010
The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art Exhibition Gallery, New York
Since its birth in the first half of the nineteenth century, photography has offered an unprecedented way to analyze works of art for further study. Through crop, focus, angle of view, degree of close-up, and lighting, as well as through ex post facto techniques of darkroom manipulation, collage, montage, and assemblage, photographers not only interpret the works they record but create stunning reinventions. The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today presents a critical examination of the intersections between photography and sculpture, exploring how the one medium has become implicated in the understanding of the other. Through a selection of nearly three hundred outstanding pictures by more than one hundred artists from the dawn of modernism to the present, the exhibition looks at the ways in which photography at once informs and challenges our understanding of sculpture. Addressing how and why sculpture became a photographic subject, the exhibition examines pictures that range in subject from inanimate objects to performing bodies. The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today features major works by Eugène Atget, Hans Bellmer, Herbert Bayer, Constantin Brancusi, Brassaï Claude Cahun, Marcel Duchamp, Fischli & Weiss, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Cyprien Gaillard, Robert Gober, David Goldblatt, Rachel Harrison, Hannah Höch, André Kertész, Man Ray, Bruce Nauman, Charles Nègre, Gillian Wearing, Hannah Wilke, and Iwao Yamawaki, among others. The exhibition will travel to Kunsthaus Zürich, where it will be on view from February 25 through May 15, 2011.

[26.07.2010] 6. Berlin Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst
1.8.2010, 20 Uhr
